Girrawah Park Aboriginal Site
Girrawah Park is a National Trust heritage site in Canberra’s Gungahlin district. Featuring a number of ancient Aboriginal sites and archaeological remains, Girrawah Park Aboriginal Site is also rich in native flora and fauna. A giant goanna welcomes you to Girrawah Park. Tucked away in the suburb of Ngunnawal, local Aboriginal people and the Canberra Archaeological Society agitated for the site to be exempted from suburban development.
Stone was an extremely important element of Aboriginal culture, essential to day-today living. Stone artefacts thus constitute an enduring record of Aboriginal technology and settlement patterns. Girrawah Park is one of several chert outcrop procurement places recorded in the ACT. The place demonstrates the extraction of chert to manufacture flaked artefacts. Rock types most suited to stone manufacture include, but are not limited to, silcretes, chert and fine grained volcanic rock. Location: Gamburrah Street, Gungahlin, Canberra
