Former Baptist Church House, East Melbourne

Built in 1859 and 1863, the first stage comprised the bluestone hall with raked floor and seating arranged in a semi-circle around the Ministers desk. The facade was added in 1863. The two towers were never carried out to their full height and the portico space was filled in at a later date. The beautifully proportioned facade is modelled on a Greek or Roman temple, perhaps the Maison Carre at Nimes and, together with the Collins Street Church, reflects the non-Gothic principles of the early church leaders. Architect: Thomas Watts.
