McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park

According to its Director, Robert Lindsay, the McClelland Sculpture Park exists as a commitment to a belief that art and nature have the capacity to provide for a better future . The sculpture park, which regularly showcases more than 70 works, is just one component of the McClelland prefecture. There's also an artists' library, shop, café and three indoor exhibition spaces. In addition, the property plays host to community art groups.

The development of Victoria's arts community was hugely important to artist and philanthropist Harry McClelland. It was in his honour that his sister, poet Annie May, made provisions in her will for the eventual establishment of the McClelland Gallery. It opened in 1971 on the McClelland's Langwarrin property. The sculpture park came a little later, following the establishment of the Elisabeth Murdoch Sculpture Foundation in 1989.

History is captured in one of the indoor exhibition spaces, aptly entitled The McClelland Room. Its exhibitions have included works from the collection by Harry McClelland, whose painting studio can still be found on the property. An ongoing line-up of engaging exhibitions and public programs lures thousands of visitors to McClelland each year. Its location may be an inconspicuous one - but art intertwined with nature makes for a convincing detour.
