Mornington Railway

Mornington Railway is a heritage broad-gauge railway operating in the Mornington Peninsula between Moorooduc and Mornington. The Railway operates both Steam and Diesel heritage broad gauge locomotives and heritage passenger cars. Running days are normally the first three Sundays of each month.

The Railway s steam locomotive K163 is scheduled to operate on all running days except where noted as 'Diesel Days'. Heritage diesel replace steam when the steam locomotive is not in service and on days of Total Fire Ban, and, at the discretion of the society, when extremely high temperatures are forecast or where the days previous to a running day have recorded high temperatures.

The Mornington Railway is conveniently located on the Mornington Peninsula, approximately 60 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. The area is well serviced by several major highways, all of which are prominently signposted. The two main stations on the Mornington line are Moorooduc and Mornington. There is also a small station at Tanti, which is midway between the two main stations. There is ample free parking available at all stations.

A courtesy bus meets every train at Mornington to take passengers into the township itself, which is about three minutes drive from the station. The bus also does pick-ups in Mornington on a regular basis to deliver passengers back to the station. The courtesy bus is a free service supported by the Mornington Chamber of Commerce, however a gold coin donation would be appreciated to assist with offsetting the cost of the fuel.

The Mornington Railway Preservation Society (MRPS) is the not-for-profit incorporated association that manages the MR, was formed out of a public meeting in 1984 with the objective of securing access to the then-closed Mornington railway line. The vision was to reopen it as a heritage railway, focusing on the operation of steam-hauled passenger trains. In 1991, after seven years of hard work and lobbying, the MRPS was granted a State Government Order in Council, which gave it access and operating rights to the line, so it could be operated as a tourist railway.
