Queens Bridge

Named in honour of Queen Victoria, the bridge was designed by Mr Rampant, detailed designwork was prepared by Checci and Catani of the Public Works Department and was constructed by David Munro. It replaced an earlier structure, Falls Bridge, a timber footbridge which was built in 1860. The name of the older bridge old referred to a rocky bar which, when the Yarra River was first navigated by white settlers, stretched across the river and made progress upstream beyond this point impossible for larger vessels. The remains of The Falls were removed when the new Princes Bridge was erected.

Queens Bridge is supported on iron piers which were designed to resemble a row of sumerged Doric columns, joined together by semi-circular arches. In contrast to the bridge's massive sub-structure are its long balustrades and cornice mouldings.
