Webb Dock Bridge

The Webb Dock Pedestrian Bridge is a modification of the former Webb Dock Railway Bridge for use by pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge runs parallel with the Charles Grimes road bridge and provides a connection over the Yarra between Docklands and Southbank. The line was only open from 1986 to 1996 and some of the line remains in place up at the Loimer Street end. The bridge shape was changed considerably of course to fit in with the area, especially the aboriginal "fishing net" shape on the Yarra.

Located adjacent to the Charles Grimes Bridge, the new bridge was prefabricated in Geelong and erected on two barges before being floated into its final position. Representing the Aboriginal fishing traps, drums and baskets used prior to European settlement, this complex design involved some of our most experienced draftspersons using the latest techniques available in AutoCAD 3D modeling. Many of the individual components were fabricated from computer files without the necessity of drawings. The latest centrepiece in the Melbourne Docklands, Webb Dock Bridge, set along the Yarra River, is the work of internationally acclaimed architects Denton Corker Marshall. Robert Owen, artist.
