Wheeler Centre

In August 2008, Melbourne followed Edinburgh as the second City of Literature to be appointed as part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. The designation recognises Melbourne's lush literary culture, which is celebrated by an engaging program of literary events and a diverse network of writers, publishers, booksellers and literary organisations. Integral to Melbourne's City of Literature movement is the Wheeler Centre, which in early 2010 launched a year-round program of talks, readings and debates intended to perpetuate the discussion and practice of writing and ideas in Melbourne.

Named after the philanthropic foundation established by Lonely Planet founders Tony and Maureen Wheeler, the centre houses many of Melbourne s key literary organisations, such as the Victorian Writers Centre, the Australian Poetry Centre and Melbourne PEN. The engine rooms of the Emerging and Melbourne Writers Festivals are located here too. And where better to house this literary love-in than the State Library of Victoria. The Wheeler Centre is lodged in the library s south wing (otherwise known as Barry Hall). A $13.6 million refurbishment has modernised facilities while retaining the historic charm bequeathed by architect Joseph Reed. The city's illustrious literary standing looks to be on solid ground.
