Coorabakh National Park

Newbys Lookout

Three prominent volcanic intrusions known as Big Nellie, Flat Nellie and Little Nellie dominate the park. Tall open eucalypt forest gives way to low stunted shrubland on the exposed summits and the Lansdowne escarpment, while warm temperate and subtropical rainforest is found in protected gullies. This unique habitat is home to threatened species such as the spotted-tailed quoll, powerful owl and stuttering frog.

Activities: Newbys Cave is a short stroll along Newbys Creek from the carpark. Newbys Lookout offers picnic facilities and sweeping views of the Manning Valley. Flat Rock Lookout overlooks the upper Lansdowne Valley and Comboyne Plateau escarpment. Starrs Creek Picnic Area includes a rainforest boardwalk and there's another picnic area at Big Nellie. Newby's Cave is actually a number of caves or rock overhangs that have been formed by the erosive action of Newby's Creek. The first cave is reached with a minute or two of very easy walking. The walk then continues past the cave and through the rainforest along Newby's Creek, reaching further caves along the way.

There are no camping facilities within Coorabakh National Park, but there are in the nearby Coopernook State Forest at the Coopernook Forest Park. From here the national park's features are easily visited with a day trip. The Coopernook Forest Park is located a short drive from the Pacific Highway and Moorland (about 5 minutes) on the Forest Drive.

Access: 25 km north of Taree. Follow the signs on Pacific Highway at Moorland, 20 km north of Taree.
