Shoalhaven Zoo

Shoalhaven Zoo is the largest Australian native animal park on the New South Wales South Coast. The park is set on six hectares on the banks of the Shoalhaven River, and is home to over a hundred species of mammals, birds and reptiles. The park, previously known as Nowra Animal Park, has been around for about 30 years offering affordable family outing for Shoalhaven residents and visiting families. The Park is owned by Nicholas Schilko who purchased the property in 2003.

During the week there is a Koala Show in the morning and again in the afternoon. Visitors have an opportunity to pat a koala. There is also a snake show and a monkey show. You can wander around and pat and hand fed kangaroos. On weekends and public holidays there are additional shows including monkey feeding, crocodile feeding and dingo feeding.

Australian native mammals include Koala, Common Wombat, Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat, Red Kangaroo, Eastern Grey Kangaroo, Western Grey Kangaroo, Common Wallaroo, Agile Wallaby, Red-necked Wallaby, Swamp Wallaby, Quokka, Spotted-tailed Quoll, Dingo.

There is a variety of Australian birds on display such as Emu, Southern Cassowary, Bush Stone-curlew, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, Major Mitchell's Cockatoo, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Galah, Rainbow Lorikeet, Musk Lorikeet, Eclectus Parrot, Australian King Parrot, Crimson Rosella, Eastern Rosella, Tawny Frogmouth, Laughing Kookaburra, Blue-winged Kookaburra, Gouldian Finch, Star Finch.

One of the most popular exhibits is the Saltwater Crocodile exhibit. Snakes on display include the endangered venomous Broad-headed Snake, which is part of a new display at the park. Other reptiles on display include Lace Monitor, Ridge-tailed Monitor, Frilled Lizard, Bearded Dragon, Blue-tongued Lizard, Olive Python, Carpet Python, Eastern Snake-necked Turtle and Long-necked Turtle. The park also has many exotic animals. The goal is to make the Park experience more interactive where visitors can visit and feed certain animals under the supervision of a keeper.



Shoalhaven Zoo offers family accommodation with full camping facilities including toilet blocks with hot showers. The cost of camping is quite reasonable, with an additional small electricity charge per site. The Park caters for birthday parties and group functions. The parkland by the river at Nowra Wildlife Park can be hired as a wedding venue - this setting on the banks of the Shoalhaven River would b a pleasant spot for a wedding function.

The Park has a refreshments kiosk and riverside cafe serving snacks and meals. There are gas barbecue facilities and a picnic area by the river where you can have a picnic lunch. The gift shop offers a selection of souvenirs to remind you of your visit.

Shoalhaven Zoo, 23 Rock Hill Road, North Nowara, is about 4 km from the Shoalhaven River Bridge. Open every day of the year (except Christmas Day) from 9am to 5pm.
