Potoroo Palace, Merimbula

Potoroo Palace is a not for profit wildlife sanctuary located at Merimbula in the Bega Valley of New South Wales. One of the aims of the organisation is to educate the public about the importance of the conservation of native Australian animals and plants. The variety of species exhibited is fairly small compared to some of the larger zoos and sanctuaries.

Many animals kept at the sanctuary are native mammals of the Bega Valley area including Long-nosed Potoroos, Swamp Wallabies, Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Wombats, Long-nosed Bandicoots and Short-beaked Echidnas.

Grey Kangaroos roam freely around part of the sanctuary, and visitors can walk amongst them and get right up close to these friendly marsupials. Emus also wander around among the kangaroos. You will also see Koalas at Potoroo Palace, although these are rare in the Bega Valley. Echidnas can be found in a grassed enclosure with a waterfall and stream. The Long-Nosed Potoroos and Brush-tailed Bettongs are housed in an enclosure with a waterfall and a boardwalk. Bare-Nosed Wombats live in a large enclosure where they can bury underground to escape the heat of the day. Baby wombats are often brought to the sanctuary where visitors can see them close up. Two Dingoes are housed in a large enclosure with a pool, caves and open areas where they can be seen. There is an enclosure with several Tamar Wallabies, with a path down the side of their pen so that you can see them easily.

There are several Shingle-back Lizards, and you will get the chance to see them and handle them up close during keeper talks. They are also known as Two-headed Lizards, Pine Cone Lizards or Bob-tailed Lizards.

The park is also home to a few tame Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo that have been brought up in captivity and are over 30 years old.

Animal Talks are scheduled for 11:00am and 2:00pm each day. There is a train ride for a small addition charge.

Location: 2372 Princes Highway, Merimbula. The sanctuary is open from 10:00am to 4:00pm on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. (Open seven days a week during Victoria and New South Wales school holidays).
