Urunga

A small, tranquil seaside resort town at the mouth of the Bellinger and Kalang rivers, Urunga is known primarily for its many surfing spots, but it is also a good fishing ground, with bream being the main sport fish.

Where is it?: 505 km north east of Sydney; 28 km south of Coffs Harbour; 16 km east of Bellingen.

Events: Urunga celebrates with a small festival called Toast Urunga, a yearly festive event with fabulous regional music, a Food & Wine Festival all in a picturesque outdoor setting.

One of the area's lesser known retreats, it is popular among those who know it and holiday there regularly because of its quiet, unhurried and relaxed atmosphere, superb year-round climate and marvellous beaches. Locals and regulars see its bypassing by the busy Pacific Highway as a blessing.

Hungry Head, 4 km to the south is the only patrolled beach in Urunga.

Raleigh Vineyard and Winery, off the Pacific Highway just north of Urunga, is one of Australia's most easterly vineyards. It is well known for its Brandy Creme Liqueur and unique red and white wines. While sampling wine and cheese on the winery deck, visitors can actually relax and watch the dolphins in the Bellinger River.
