Scenic Railway Journeys of Europe

The pick of Europe’s Great Rail Journeys … in which getting there is truly half the fun.

The Bernina Express train connects Chur in Switzerland to Poschiavo in Switzerland and Tirano in Italy by crossing the Swiss Engadin Alps. Most travel magazines and websites list this among the most scenic railway journeys in the world.

Centovilla Railway

This scenic train between Locarno and Domodossola runs through the magical “Hundred Valleys” – the Centovalli. It offers some of the most beautiful views in Europe. The Centovalli Railway is fully included in a Eurail pass.

Innsbruck via Garmisch

The conventional – and shortest – way to travel between Munich and Innsbruck by rail is through Kufstein. There is another way – it takes an hour longer but is more scenic, which passes through Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Jungfraujoch is a notable saddle in the Bernese Alps, connecting the two four-thousander peaks Jungfrau and Mönch, at an elevation of 3,466 metres above sea level. Its railway station is Europe’s highest. The Jungfraujoch can be reached by cogwheel train only.

Semmering Railway

The Semmering Railway, constructed between 1848 and 1854 over 41 km of high mountains, is one of the greatest feats of civil engineering during the pioneering phase of railway building, and is among the world’s first scenic railway.

Glacier Express

The Glacier Express is an express train connecting railway stations of the two major mountain resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. For much of its journey, it also passes along and through the World Heritage Site known as the Rhaetian Railway.

Belgrade to Bar Railway

This 476 km long, 11 hour train journey between the Serbian capital of Belgrade and the Adriatic town of Bar in Montenegro is one of eastern Europe’s lesser known travel gems. This spectacular scenic railway passes through 254 tunnels, and over 435 bridges, delighting the traveller with stunning mountain scenery.
