Deniliquin


A central Riverina service centre that is surrounded by rivers and lagoons, Deniliquin town lies at the centre of four irrigation districts, the largest area under irrigation in Australia.

Where is it?: Deniliquin is located at the intersection of the Riverina and Cobb Highway approximately 725 km south west of Sydney, 285 km north of Melbourne, 78 km north of Echuca on the banks of the Edward River.

Events: Deniliquin Easter Festival features a street parade, tennis championships, a Rotary Art Exhibition, a rodeo and both golf and bowls championships. A major ball is held at Conargo on New Year's Eve.

As the largest town in the south western Riverina, there is a range of government and commercial services to residents of the town and the surrounding area.


Deniliquin is home to the Play on the Plains Festival held each September/October on the New South Wales Labour Day long weekend. The festival includes the famous Deniliquin Ute Muster. Deniliquin markets itself as the Utility Capital of the World.

Things To See and Do

Australian Ricegrower's Cooperative Mill is the largest rice mill in the southern hemisphere with a milling capacity of 50 tonnes per hour. It has a visitor's centre open weekdays 9.30-12 and 2-4, which looks at the process of growing and milling.

St Andrew's Uniting Church (1871) is a finely detailed heritage-listed building constructed of the red brick characteristic of the Deniliquin area. Designed in the Free Gothic Style, the Church features a window that replicates Da Vinci's 'The Last Supper'.

Cobb Highway Touring Route: follows The Cobb Highway (named for the famous coach company) from Echuca Moama on the Victorian border, through to Wilcannia leading to the iconic outback towns of Bourke, Broken Hill and White Cliffs. The modern Cobb Highway follows part of the great network of stock routes that became known as The Long Paddock - a historic web of tracks and trails linking stock-breeding areas of inland NSW and Queensland with emerging markets in Victoria. Benjamin Boyd came to the area from Eden and established a run known as Deniliquin near the present townsite in 1842. Other soon followed and by 1845 the nucleus of a town began to emerge. Deniliquin was surveyed in 1848 and entered a period of rapid growth.

It was at Morago homestead, 40 km north-west, that George Hall Peppin and his two sons, who were experienced English sheep breeders, developed a new breed of sheep that was better adapted to Australian condition than the merino. Their successes laid the foundation of Australia's reputation as a quality wool exporter.
