Ebenezer

Ebenezer, a village which staggles alongside various roads rather than having a central focal point, is the site of Australia's oldest church (1809).

Where Is It?: north-west of Sydney on the Hawkesbury River, 12km from the township of Windsor. Ebenezer is located on the rich alluvial soil of the flood plains of the Hawkesbury.

Things To See and Do

Ebenezer Church overlooks the Hawkesbury River in a rural/bushland area. Built in 1809, Ebenezer Church is the oldest existing church in Australia. It became the first Presbyterian Church in Australia in 1824. Ebenezer Church and its community have a unique place in the heritage of Christian faith and in pioneer farming of the nation. The cemetery in the churchyard is recognised as historically being one of the most important cemeteries in Australia.

It was the first Presbyterian cemetery in Australia and contains the graves of many of the Scots who arrived on the ship the Coromandel in 1802, who founded Ebenezer, and other church pioneers who were amongst the first settlers in the Hawkesbury. Ebenezer Church has been lovingly restored, and devonshire teas are served from the old schoolmaster's cottage nearby. This tiny building contains a museum about Ebenezr and the Coromandel pioneer families.
