Hat Head

The tranquil seaside community of Hat Head is surrounded by the unspoilt grandeur of Hat Head National Park. It is predominantly a fishing village and tourist (fishing) resort. Approximately 350 permanent residents are living on a sand based land mass surrounded by National Park and water - little if any land remains for new building. It is a sought after and desirable location providing unique residential conditions - away from mainstream activity - paradise at its best with no commercialism.

Where is it?: 459 km north of Sydney

Being is one of the closest points to the Continental Shelf on Australia's East Coast, Hat Head offers a whole range of landbased fishing options. "The Island" or "The Point" are nenowed for catching small marlin, sailfish, spanish mackeral, big tuna and massive tailor. Numerous other spots in the area hold big schools of tailor, great mulloway and bream.

Hat Head is unique among Australian towns as its main street and is below sea level, however it has been many years since any flood activity invaded the village and then it was slight.

Hat Head National Park: the park's beaches, sand dunes, rainforest and wetlands offer an ideal backdrop for bushwalking, camping or a quiet picnic. There are lots of walking tracks to choose from, excellent fishing and whale watching. Birdwatchers can look for black swans and spoonbills in the park's wetlands, hawks and eagles soaring above beach cliffs and shorebirds like curlews and plovers around the beach. The park has a choice of campgrounds, including campsites right by the beach, or you could stay at the Smoky Cape lighthouse keepers' cottage with its stunning coastal views, be sure to take a guided tour.
