Narromine


A small pastoral and agricultural town on the Macquarie River. The Narromine silo dominates the town.

Where is it?: Central West. Narromine is 458 km north west of sydney; 39 km west of Dubbo at the junction of the Newell and Mitchell Highways.

Narromine promotes itself as the 'Town of Champions' due to the fact that Narromine was the birthplace of a number of Australia's sporting greats, including cricketer Glenn Mcgrath; track sprinter and Olympian, Melinda Gainsford-Taylor; 1990s Rugby League player David Gillespie and top glider pilot David Jansen.

Narromine was the subject of Banjo Paterson's humorous poem 'The City of the Dreadful Thirst' which evokes the townsfolk's incurable sense of thirst which no amount of drinking will cure.

Events: Narromine is currently home to the annual National Ultra-Light Fly-In Festival (NATFLY) which takes place every Easter weekend. Other annual events include the National Gliding Championships in January, the Easter Fishing Competition, the Tomingley Picnic Races in April, the Mungery Muster Ball in August, the Narromine Agricultural Show and the Mungery Picnic Races in September, the Chute Out Bullride in November and the NSW Gliding Championship in December.

Things To See And Do

Gliding and flying attract large numbers of people to the area every year. Considered the best gliding area in the world, Narromine is a renowned flying centre and is the venue for both international and national gliding events every year. The local aerodrome houses the nation's oldest country aero club.

Unusually, the Narromine airport also houses Australia's first residential Skypark, which is an arrangement whereby people can buy a plot of land adjacent the airport, built a house and a private hangar on their land and park their plane in their own yard.

To celebrate its historical importance, Narromine aerodrome is home to Narromine Aviation Museum which displays a collection of aeronautical memorabilia and paraphernalia.


Swane's Nursery (5 km west) covers 56 ha and grows 250 000 roses on 5000 bushes each year. The nursery is open to visitors onweekdays and at other times by appointment. The roses are in bloom from March to April and October to November.


The Lime Grove (5 km west) is Australia's largest lime orchard. Limes are available from February to June, along with Lime Grove products such as oils, cordial, mustard, jam and olives. Visits can be organised by prior arrangement, tel: (02) 6889 1962.




Narromine Iris Farm (4 km south) has over 700 different tall bearded iris, as well as Louisiana and Spuria iris, daylilies, cannas and geraniums. There is a pleasant shaded picnic area and visitors are welcome to bring a packed lunch and enjoy a free cuppa.

Surrounding Area
In the late 1940s, work commenced on the construction of a large dam on the Macquarie River in the Burrendong Valley to supply water for irrigation of crops, mostly cotton, further west. Burrendong Dam was finally completed in 1967 and, as it filled, the rising water level eventually submerged the old villages, cemeteries and the many lonely graves in the valley. Lake Burrendong State Park today offers year-round attractions for fishing enthusiasts, nature lovers, bushwalkers, campers and picnickers.


Narromine is on the Cobb & Co Heritage Trail, which celebrates the famous stage coach service that operated throughout Australia in the 19th century. Cobb & Co sites in Narromine include the old blacksmith's shop, the Narromine Hotel, the Royal Hotel (where passengers once stayed) and Narromine Cemetery, where two former coach drivers are buried. Sites within the shire include Dandaloo, Gin Gin Bridge, the Timbrebongie Hotel, Tomingley, Trangie and Weemabah.


Macquarie River Trails are designed to let you explore the many attractions and treasures of this rich farming region supported by the Macquarie River in central western NSW. There are five trails to choose from - heritage, nature, river, produce and cycle - which visitors to a diverse number of locations between Lake Burrendong to the Macquarie Marshes.
